Do you ever find yourself thinking, "Others are more qualified"? This common limiting belief can hinder our growth and prevent us from seizing opportunities. Many black women experience this, feeling overshadowed by others' achievements and success. It's time to shift this narrative and embrace our unique skills and experiences.
Question: do you identify with the limiting belief: "Believing That Others Are More Capable or Deserving"
The belief that others are more qualified can stem from various sources, including societal pressures, cultural expectations, personal insecurities, and our past/upbringing. It's crucial to remember that your journey is unique, and comparing yourself to others only undermines your full potential and your ability.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Comparing Yourself to Others: Constantly measuring your worth against others' accomplishments.
Resistance to Apply for Opportunities: Avoiding new roles or projects due to feelings of inadequacy.
Undervaluing Your Success: Failing to recognize and celebrate your abilities and achievements.
As Michelle Obama once said, "Am I good enough? Yes, I am."
But how do you begin believing that you're good enough? It's as simple as acknowledging and celebrating your unique skills and experiences. Everyone has a different path, and your experiences have shaped you in a way that is valuable and irreplaceable.
How to fully overcome not feeling good enough...
Identify and Build on Your Strengths: Take time to reflect on your strengths and how they have contributed to your successes. Focus on what you do well and continue to develop those areas.
Seek Mentorship: Find mentors who can provide guidance, encouragement, and perspective. Their support can help you see your potential more clearly.
Take on Challenges Outside Your Comfort Zone: Push yourself to take on new and challenging tasks. This will build your confidence and prove to yourself that you are capable.
How do you keep this limiting belief away once you've overcome it?
Surround Yourself with Supportive People: Engage with a community of positive, encouraging individuals who uplift and inspire you.
Regularly Update and Review Your Achievements and Skills: Keep a record of your accomplishments and skills. Regularly reviewing this list will remind you of your value and growth.
As Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, said, "Never be limited by other people's limited imaginations."
Listen, there is no shame if you are currently dealing with limiting beliefs or have in the past. It's all about doing better and helping others to do the same.
